First Impression:
I first visited Southern Nash Middle School during the summer, and was struck by it's welcoming and clean environment. I was greeted by the guidance secretary, who then introduced me to the school's two Assistant Principals, Doug Davis and Denise Warner. Both Mr. Davis and Mrs. Warner gave me a campus tour. Although it was summer, I was impressed with how anyone we ran into said hello and welcomed me to the SNMS team. During the tour, I met additional front office staff and custodians. I walked away from Southern Nash Middle School with an excellent first impression, and I was excited for my anticipated internship there.

Southern Nash Middle School is an open campus, of seven separate hallways and eleven mobile units, connected by a network of covered-outdoor walkways. In addition to 75 traditional classrooms and offices, the campus houses a cafeteria, gym, auxiliary gym, band room, media center, baseball and softball fields. It is a large campus surrounded by wooded areas and farm fields. While it is an older building, the faculty and staff take great prided in the school. The classrooms, hallways, offices and outdoor spaces are kept extremely clean. Paint is kept fresh, floors are swept and waxed, sets of classroom desks match and desks are repaired or otherwise replaced.
The areas designated for carpool and buses are both relatively small compared to approximately 1,100 students that need to get to and from school each day. Based on the lack of physical space to stack a carpool line and the location on a two-lane NC state highway, dismissal is one of the largest concerns with the facility. Currently the administrative staff is working with the high school (with which we share buses) and transportation department to find the optimal time schedule that moves students off campus in a timely but safe manner.
In 2011-2012, the official enrollment was 1099 students. The intended maximum capacity is 850 students. This resulted in a 129% utilization rate.
Contrary to the over utilization of the facility, student transitions are smooth. Most teams of CORE teachers are in the same building, and work together to create their own procedures for moving students to class. Even with approximately 1,100 students, the hallways are not overly crowded.

The most noticeable difference between the 2011-2012 and the 2012-2013 budgets is the drastic decrease in beginning funds. The beginning budgets dropped from $95,995 in 2011-12 to $56,839 in 2012-13. All aspects of the budget have been effected, including office and janitorial supplies. Professional development resources for staff, including funds for substitutes during staff workshops, has been impacted the most. Funds for such activities are no longer listed on the overall budget. One similarity between the two budgets, is that instructional supplies represents the largest portion of both budgets.
School Curriculum:Southern Nash Middle School has adopted the Common Core State Standards in ELA and Mathematics, as well as the NC Essential Standards in Science and Social Studies for grades six through eight. In addition, SNMS offers AIG and EC services in a full inclusion program. The school does house one self-contained classroom in which the Extensions of the Common Core and Essential Standards are taught. Southern Nash offers a wider variety of electives than any other middle school in Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. Students take two of the following electives each semester: Computer Skills, Introduction to Digital World, Introduction to Engineering, Life Skills, Health/PE, Band and Art. Introduction to Agriculture and Robotics are two new electives available to SNMS students only. The NRMS, middle-school schedule also mandates a 45-minute exploratory block for every grade level. During this block student participate in a variety of course to gain exposure to multiple disciplines, careers and extracurricular activities.

School Web Site/Communication:
The school's website is a useful resource for parents, students and staff. One very unique strength of the website is access to the Parent Assistant Portal. Southern Nash Middle is one of five schools participating in the portal's pilot program. The Parent Assistant allows parents to view student data such as grades, absences and assignments. The Parent Assistant Portal has added an additional layer of communication between families and the school.
